Travel

We do not want you to experience any unpleasant surprises when you cross the borders of the European Union during a journey. Learn here which goods are tax/duty-free, and which customs regulations you must observe.

Entering Germany

Restrictions

You may not just bring everything that is on sale abroad with you. In Germany certain goods, such as pharmaceuticals, narcotics, but also media likely to harm minors and unconstitutional media are subject to restrictions or bans. You must declare funds of 10,000 euros or more.

Duties and Taxes

If the goods and presents you are carrying are to remain free of taxes or excise duties you must meet certain conditions and observe the allowances.
Obviously, the personal possessions that you bring with you on your journey are exempt from duties, since they are considered personal property or sports equipment in temporary admission. However, for valuable objects such as jewellery, expensive digital cameras, and so on, you may be asked follow a special procedure.

Leaving Germany

Restrictions

If you leave for a non-EU Country you must always declare any goods that are subject to authorisations or bans. These may be protected animals, plants and products made from them, but also media likely to harm minors and unconstitutional media. If you are carrying funds of 10,000 euros you must also declare them.

Tax-free Shopping

If you are a traveller from a non-EU country you can make purchases in Germany without paying turnover tax (VAT).
