On Thursday, October 3rd, Germany celebrates the 29th anniversary of its reunification. After forty long years of division, political antagonism and military confrontation between East and West during the Cold War,  it was a most joyous moment many of us had no longer expected to see in our lifetime.  During the past 29 years, reunited Germany has not only concentrated its political energy and its resources to heal the scars of its own division and to integrate and economically revitalize  the former communist East, it has also become a driving  force for European unification, and has assumed new responsibilities on the world stage. As Germany gratefully remembers the day its own national unity was restored,  it remains mindful  that it is called to stay the course to work for a strong and united Europe as the best possible safeguard of peace and stability on the continent and beyond, even in the face of adverse developments within the European Union and resurgent nationalist sentiment.
