On 15 April 2023, after many years of preparation, Germany finally completed its phase-out of nuclear power. This decision has been met with a lack of understanding in many countries. At the same time, against the backdrop of the global energy crisis, we are seeing renewed interest in expanding the use of nuclear power. At COP28, 22 countries signed a declaration to triple their nuclear energy capacity by 2050. The COP28 agreement, too, mentions accelerating nuclear technologies. Within the EU, Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are gaining more and more attention. An industrial alliance focused on this issue is being launched in 2024.

Germany sees a danger that, despite the economic, ecological and security-related advantages of other technologies over nuclear power, substantial financial resources will flow into nuclear projects, whereby less funding will then go to expanding the use of renewable energies. To prevent this, we want to explain why Germany does not consider nuclear power to be a future-proof source of energy.
